Traveling with a Baby – From What Age Is It Recommended?
The First Months – Best to Stay Home
Newborns (0–3 months) are very sensitive and require frequent feeding and plenty of rest. At this stage, long trips or international travel are not recommended unless absolutely necessary (for medical reasons or urgent family matters). Both baby and parents usually feel more comfortable staying in a familiar environment.
3–6 Months – Short Domestic Trips
From around three months of age, babies begin to adapt more easily, which makes short domestic trips possible. A comfortable car seat, frequent stops for feeding and rest, and ensuring clean and safe conditions are essential.
6–12 Months – The Ideal Time to Travel
This is often considered the best age to start traveling. Babies are usually more stable, have a predictable daily routine, and adapt well to new surroundings. At this stage, both domestic holidays and short international trips can be enjoyable if parents ensure good hygiene, proper nutrition, and child-friendly accommodation.
From 1 Year Onward – Active Little Explorers
Toddlers are curious and full of energy, making travel an exciting adventure. Domestic travel becomes easier and longer trips can be planned. For international travel, parents should consider destinations with plenty of opportunities for play and movement, as toddlers need more activity and stimulation.
International Travel – When to Start?
From 6 months, short trips abroad (nearby countries, short flights or drives) are usually safe.
From 1 year, children can enjoy traveling more but also require extra attention and engagement.
For long-haul flights and distant destinations, many parents find 2 years and older to be more manageable, as children can handle the extended journey better.
Practical Tips for Parents
Always carry enough diapers, spare clothes, and food/drinks.
Consult your pediatrician before traveling abroad, especially regarding vaccinations and health advice.
Ensure safety: proper car seat, stroller, and sun protection are essential.
Try to maintain your baby’s familiar daily routine as much as possible.
Summary
0–3 months: best to stay at home.
3–6 months: short domestic trips only.
